"A Private Universe" Reflection

This video was very shocking for me. When we talked about people believing that the clouds affected the phases of the moon, I thought that was an exaggeration. Seeing that Harvard graduate students, some of which had a background in science, were confident, yet still wrong, about the basic concepts of astronomy was eye opening. As a potential middle school science teacher, I really don't want large parts of my teaching to involve me reteaching basic concepts that the students should already know because of a past teacher's ignorance or laziness. I understand reviewing concepts and making sure the students remember, but not reteaching. This video just shows that as educators, it is unfair to assume that our students are entering our classroom with the knowledge that we expect from them.
